African Library Project

A Library for New Tafo

01/28/2013 to 04/05/2013
Seattle WA

The African Library Project brings gently used books to an African community that has lots of eager readers but very few books. Please help by collecting and delivering gently used books or by raising money to help pay for shipping to Africa. It only takes 1000 books and $500 to start a single library (and a little elbow grease!)

This book drive is organized by ...

Our names are Liz and Mary-Ann and we are two Seattle moms collecting books and money to start a library in Ghana, Mary-Ann's home country. To reach our goal of 1000 books and $600 by April we are going to need help from everyone we can reach!

We want to start a library in Africa because...

New Tafo, Ghana, is near and dear to our hearts because Mary-Ann's mother lives there. She has been loaning books to local children from her home for several years.

Thanks to Mary-Ann's hard work, the local Presbyterian church has generously completed a new building for the library. Now we just need to fill it up with as many books as we can collect!

About our African Partners...

The people using this library will be children and teens from New Tafo. They are friends, families, neighbors and community members who are very excited about using and staffing a new library! People in New Tafo speak and read in English (and some also speak French).

Please contribute these kinds of books...

Books up to a 9th grade reading level are encouraged. The most useful books are those relevant to children and teens in Africa-- stories with universal themes, books about Ghana or African people, reference books, science books, you name it!

If you wish to buy books for our drive, we have an Amazon wishlist all set up here: http://amzn.com/w/JA1LQQEC74ST

Here's how you can contribute your books...

1. Ransack your child's old bookshelf, Goodwill, Value Village, the sale rack at your local library, garage sales, or anywhere else you can find good books and donate them!

2. Email your friends/family/coworkers/church members about donating books and then host your own donation box to be one of our "satellite" collectors. If everyone who wants to donate books each gets at least one more friend to give, we will reach our goal!

3. Go to our Amazon wish list and have new, relevant books sent directly to us: http://amzn.com/w/JA1LQQEC74ST

4. Share our facebook page with your friends and encourage them to donate: http://www.facebook.com/pages/A-Library-for-New-Tafo/495896633789381

5. Host a donation box at your child's school and get the word out to other parents to donate!

We need to raise funds for shipping the books...

We also need at least $600 for shipping costs. We would really appreciate your cash, check or PayPal donations! Please email us at newtafolibrary@gmail.com and we will give you the information you need for your payment.

We would LOVE if you wanted to start your own monetary donation drive, bake sale, car wash, or other fundraiser!

Here are some ways that you can help...

We are just two people trying to accomplish a lot to start this library. We absolutely cannot do it without a huge network of generous folks to help us out! Thank you for anything you can do to help us found a library that will benefit New Tafo for many years to come!
