African Library Project

Girl Scout Troop 8976 - St Charles Borromeo School, North Hollywood, CA

9/8/12 to 12/2/12
North Hollywood CA

The African Library Project brings gently used books to an African community that has lots of eager readers but very few books. Please help by collecting and delivering gently used books or by raising money to help pay for shipping to Africa. It only takes 1000 books and $500 to start a single library (and a little elbow grease!)

This book drive is organized by ...

St Charles Borromeo School Girl Scout Troop 8976 consists of 35 girls ranging from Kinder to 8th grade. Our troop has completed a number of community service projects over the past 8 years, from school mural paintings, school and park tree plantings, food drives, and reading and caroling for the seniors at St Elizabeth’s Care Center in Burbank.

We want to start a library in Africa because...

While celebrating the 100 year anniversary of Girl Scouts in San Francisco in May 2012 we came across the African Library Project booth and were inspired to donate books to this cause.

About our African Partners...

Our African partner is Mokane Primary School in Botswana, Africa which serves 944 students and teachers.

Please contribute these kinds of books...

For the library in Botswana, we need books from preschool through grade 4 reading level.

If you are not sure a book fits any of the categories above, send it anyway! We will pass it on to a local school or library.

Here's how you can contribute your books...

We need to raise funds for shipping the books...

We need to raise $500 to pay for shipping the books to Botswana, Africa. It costs $300 for international shipping for each library and approximately $200 or more to ship the books to New Orleans where they will be loaded on container ships to go to Africa. We will also have to raise funds to cover the cost of the boxes and shipping supplies.

In order to raise these funds we will hold a few lemonade stands in front of St Charles Borromeo Church.

Our Troop will also be hosting the Girl Scouts of Greater Los Angeles Magnolia Service Unit’s Community Service Day event on Sunday, November 4, 2012 from 2:00 pm to 4:30 pm at Temple Beth Hillel (upstairs in the Social Hall) 12326 Riverside Drive, Valley Village, CA 91607.

At the Community Service Day event we will be doing a variety of service projects for local families in need, seniors, and for the African Library Project. Girl Scouts from the eastern part of the San Fernando Valley will be donating books for Botswana and any excess funds generated from this event will be used to assist with the book shipping cost to Africa.

If you wish to donate monetarily to the book drive to help with the shipping or to provide for additional books to be purchased you can send write a check to "Troop 8976" and mail it to:

Here are some ways that you can help...

*Donate gently used children's books. Children grow and tastes change, it’s time for a spring cleaning but instead of tossing your gently used books, donate them for a great cause.

*Tell your friends and neighbors about our book drive and ask for donations of gently used pre-school to 6th grade level books.

*No books in your cubby? How about going to a bookstore and picking up a few books to donate to our book drive?

*Please consider making a donation to help us ship the books to Africa.

*Spread the word. Share the link!
