Got Books? Start A Library... with Brandon and the Board Newbies

We are working with the African Library Project to provide books to eager readers in Africa who have very few books. Please help us by collecting and delivering gently used books or by raising money to help pay for shipping to Africa. It takes only 1000 books and $500 (plus a little elbow grease!) to start a single library and make a huge difference in children’s lives.

Got books? We're sure you do. We've committed ourselves to the cause of spreading literacy to kids in Africa. The African Library Project's 3 new Board members are leading our inaugural book drive, to gain firsthand experience as we begin our three-year Board terms. The Board Newbies are Jennifer, Monique, Lisako and Gail. IN ADDITION, to experience a book drive through the eyes of an American child, Gail's son Brandon is our guide, leader and inspiration. Brandon is in 4th grade at St Paul's Episcopal School in Oakland, loves to read and has kicked off our drive by a) pulling his cherished but no longer read books to give to the drive and b) asked his friends to forgo giving him birthday gifts for his 9th birthday, but instead agree to donate books to our drive. By the way, we all live in the Bay Area of Northern California.

We want to start a library in Africa because...

we truly believe that the gift of literacy is the most precious gift anyone can give a child. We are very aware of the excess and privileges common for families in much of the US. So this is a perfect match of supply and demand - an elegant solution to a problem so many are working to solve.

About our African Partners...

The first 1,000 books we gather will be going to Lesotho - T'soeneng LEC Primary School. The second 1,000 books will go to Botswana to Matsieng Primary School. This school serves about 435 readers and teachers.

Please contribute these kinds of books...

Our goal is to collect 2,000 pre-school through 4th grade books. Our libraries also appreciate puzzles, flash cards, educational games in good condition and stationary.

Here's how you can contribute your books...

We are starting our book drive in September, 2012 and will conclude by Thanksgiving in November of 2012. Each Board member will be collecting books in their respective cities: Gail, Oakland/ Berkeley; Jennifer, San Francisco; Lisako, San Francisco.

We need to raise funds for shipping the books...

for we need to collect $1000 for the shipping costs - $500 per 1,000 book shipment. If you don't have access to gently used books for primary school-aged kids, a financial donation is greatly appreciated.

Here are some ways that you can help...

1. You can help by going thru the children's books in your household and donating those that you can part with. 2. You can spread the word to your friends and become a mini-book donation center on your own, for us. 3. you can come to our crazy-fun book packing party in November - we'll let you know.
