Bellarmine Mathewson Library African Library Project Book Drive

09/05/2012 to 10/19/2012
San Jose CA

We are working with the African Library Project to provide books to eager readers in Africa who have very few books. Please help us by collecting and delivering gently used books or by raising money to help pay for shipping to Africa. It takes only 1000 books and $500 (plus a little elbow grease!) to start a single library and make a huge difference in children’s lives.

This book drive is organized by ...

This will be the third ALP book drive that Bellarmine has conducted. The Parents and Students at Bellarmine College Preparatory have been exceedingly generous in donating great books to help students in Africa learn the lifelong pleasure of reading.

We want to start a library in Africa because...

We are a blessed community, and as a Jesuit institution we are compelled to share our resources.

About our African Partners...

The Bellarmine Library is collecting books for the Quthing Secondary School in Lesotho. Quthing Secondary School is located in the rural village of Ha Makoae in the district of Quthing, Lesotho. The students range from 13-22 years old. The subjects taught in school are math, science, Sesotho (local language of Lesotho), English, Life Skills, and History. It is mandatory for the students to learn in English.

Please contribute these kinds of books...

Besides encyclopedias (published within the past 15 years), dictionaries, math and science books, Quthing School has requested
• Books on ethics
• Books on girl’s empowerment/gender equality
• Basic gardening and sewing books
• Flash Cards
• Books on HIV and STDs (easy level with pictures and diagrams)
• Reading books like Nancy Drew, Hardy Boys, Box Car Children (or similar books at that reading level)
• Chicken Soup for the teenage soul
• Posters on HIV or sex education to decorate the room
• Maps of the world and Africa

Here's how you can contribute your books...

Please bring your book donations to the Bellarmine Library on school days between September 5, 2012, and October 19, 2012.

We need to raise funds for shipping the books...

We will raise $500 to pay for shipping the books to Africa by asking for a donation of $1 from each student in Homeroom in mid-October.

Here are some ways that you can help...

Ask friends and neighbors to donate 4th - 8th grade level books to the Bellarmine ALP book drive.

A special thank you is due to two families who made extaordinary donations. The family of Julian Macias donated nearly 200 books (close to 1/5 of our total). The family of Ryan Reshke donated a 2003 Encyclopaedia Britannica set (32 volumes), in perfect condition. It took Ryan 4 trips to carry the encyclopaedias into the library!
