The Bockbrader's African Library Project

08/01/2012 to 06/30/2013
Esko MN

We are working with the African Library Project to provide books to eager readers in Africa who have very few books. Please help us by collecting and delivering gently used books or by raising money to help pay for shipping to Africa. It takes only 1000 books and $500 (plus a little elbow grease!) to start a single library and make a huge difference in children’s lives.

This book drive is organized by ...

Hi! My name is Tracy Bockbrader and I am a Chemistry and Physics teacher in a small northern Minnesota town. About five years ago I had the wonderful opportunity to travel to Tanzania, Africa and teach chemistry in an all girls school for a couple weeks. We also toured the area and visited some primary schools and orphanages. There is a special place in my heart for Africa and African children and students particularly!
My family and my sister's family have always been "strong" readers and big believers in books! I've always believed that I could do ANYTHING as long as I could have a book to guide me! (Thanks mom and dad!) But this love for reading has left us practically able to open a library ourselves!

We want to start a library in Africa because...

Browsing the web looking for ideas for donating our books that I was looking to get rid of, I came across the African Library Project. It struck me as the perfect combination of my love for reading and my love for Africa. Plus, as a teacher, building literacy is extremely important!

Please contribute these kinds of books...

We've chosen a Community Library and are collecting books at U.S. preschool to 8th grade reading level.

Here's how you can contribute your books...

Books can be donated from August 2012 to June 2013 at Salem Lutheran Church in Hermantown, MN and from September 2012 to June 2013 at Carlton High School in Carlton, MN. Of course, the Bockbrader family will also be gathering books at their home as well in Esko, MN.

We need to raise funds for shipping the books...

It does cost money to ship the books to Africa! Right now we have no specific fundraising plans--I'll work on that once I get back to school! If you wish to donate monetarily to the book drive, you can send your donation to:
The Bockbraders
55 Stillmeadow Rd
Esko, MN 55733
