Ben's African Library Project (completed)

06/01/2012 to 01/31/2013
Los Altos CA

We are working with the African Library Project to provide books to eager readers in Africa who have very few books. Please help us by collecting and delivering gently used books or by raising money to help pay for shipping to Africa. It takes only 1000 books and $500 (plus a little elbow grease!) to start a single library and make a huge difference in children’s lives.

This book drive is organized by ...

My name is Ben Gur and I am a seventh grader in Los Altos, CA.

We want to start a library in Africa because...

I realized how comfy and easy my life is compared to those in Africa where the illiteracy rate is astoundingly high. Four out of ten Africans cannot read or write. One of the reasons for this is the unavailability of adequate reading materials for literacy programs to take root and grow. If we put together our resources we can easily make a difference. So alongside African Library Project and with your help, let's give those who seek it, the wonderful opportunities that come from being literate.

About our African Partners...

Seaseole Primary School, Botswana

Please contribute these kinds of books...

For a Primary School Library:
Gently used books at U.S. pre-school to 4th grade reading level

Here's how you can contribute your books...

If you would like me to pick up your books, please email me at

We need to raise funds for shipping the books...

I will have "Change For Change Jars".
Please note that no amount of money is too little.

I will also hold lemonade and bake sales too.

If you are interested in making a check donation, please contact me at

Here are some ways that you can help...

1) If you have books that you no longer read or use, instead of throwing them out, donate them!

2) Contribute any loose change you may find to cover the shipping expenses. Every penny counts.

3) Spread the word and ask your family and friends to help!
