African Library Project

Bunny Book Drive

05/20/2012 to 12/02/2012
Knoxville TN

We are working with the African Library Project to provide books to eager readers in Africa who have very few books. Please help us by collecting and delivering gently used books or by raising money to help pay for shipping to Africa. It takes only 1000 books and $500 (plus a little elbow grease!) to start a single library and make a huge difference in children’s lives.

This book drive is organized by ...

Amelia, who is 4 and loves books so much herself. The idea of creating a whole library for a village has her very excited. Besides collecting books, Amelia will be thinking of various fundraisers (such as making and selling cookies) to raise money to ship our books.

We want to start a library in Africa because...

I have the idea that books can transform your whole world, even if it\'s just in small ways. I look at my daughter, even as young as she is, and see the importance of books in her life already, and I think she gets that, too. I had been trying to think of a service-type project that would be manageable for a child as young as mine to complete this summer. When I learned about this organization, it was as though several other things that had happened recently came together to point to us helping to create a library. When Amelia and I watched the videos of the children whose villages had gotten libraries, that cinched it for us. Now she is very excited.

About our African Partners...

We have offered to collect books for a community library, rather than one in a specific school, and are told our library will be in Ghana or Malawi. Villages will apply in the fall, and we will be matched with a specific village then.

Please contribute these kinds of books...

We will be sending books preschool to 8th-grade level, including board books and textbooks, along with puzzles and educational games.

However, if you would like to donate any books, what we aren\'t able to use for our library, we will trade at McKay\'s so that we can buy books for our library with the trade credit. Books that McKay\'s will not accept, we will send to Better World Books, and they will make a donation to the organization when the books sell.

Here's how you can contribute your books...

Email me at If you attend daycare with Amelia, we will have a drop-off box there in July.

We need to raise funds for shipping the books...

Amelia will be coming up with her own ideas for raising funds (and has thought of a few already). I will post more details as these occur.
