The Mermaid Girls

04/14/2012 to 11/01/2012
San Francisco CA

The African Library Project brings gently used books to an African community that has lots of eager readers but very few books. Please help by collecting and delivering gently used books or by raising money to help pay for shipping to Africa. It only takes 1000 books and $500 to start a single library (and a little elbow grease!)

This book drive is organized by ...

The Mermaid Girls: Malika and Anissa Otsmane and their Family. Dad is Hamid, born and raised in Algeria, North Africa and mama is Tammy from San Andreas, California. Malika is a 7 1/2 year old girl and Anissa is a 5 year old girl. Both are native to San Francisco. We are a homeschooling family, living in San Francisco, California. We named our book drive The Mermaid Girls since we like mermaids so much.

We want to start a library in Africa because...

We want to share books with other children. And we want to help other children learn to read. We have had the luxury of having lots and lots of books in our home library and mama reads to us girls every evening before bed for about an hour and a half. We love books and want to share our love of books with other children.

Malika: \"I like books mostly because I like mama to read them to me and I like all the pictures in them. One of my favorite books is The Sheep Of The Lal Bagh by David Mark. It\'s about a sheep becoming a lawn mower.\"

Anissa: \"And I really like the stories in books.\"

About our African Partners...

Our library will be a primary school library in Lesotho, which is pronounced
Li-sue-two.

Please contribute these kinds of books...

We are asking for gently used children\'s books from pre-school to 4th grade reading level.

Here's how you can contribute your books...

We will have a drop location for all book donations at Queen Malika Cafe at 4416 -18th Street, San Francisco, Ca. 94114. The cross streets are Eureka and Douglass. You may also call Tammy to arrange a time for her to pick up books.

We need to raise funds for shipping the books...

We are currently having Fresh Squeezed Lemonade Stands (we picked the lemons with our Uncle Greg in his back yard in San Jose) on Saturdays when the weather is warm at 18th Street and Ord Street. And we will have a Spaghetti Dinner on Sunday, July 22, 2012 at 6:30pm at Queen Malika Cafe. Please contact me to buy some Spaghetti Dinner tickets. They are on sale now!! And for every children\'s book you bring, you will receive one raffle ticket. The more books you bring, the better the chance you have to win!!

Here are some ways that you can help...

Please donate any gently used children\'s books to us at Queen Malika Cafe and please ask your friends to also donate books. We all need to pull together to get these 1000 books to Lesotho, Africa.
