African Library Project

Libraries for Lesotho

06/18/2012 to 12/01/2012
Atlanta GA

We are working with the African Library Project to provide books to eager readers in Africa who have very few books. Please help us by collecting and delivering gently used books or by raising money to help pay for shipping to Africa. It takes only 1000 books and $500 (plus a little elbow grease!) to start a single library and make a huge difference in children’s lives.

This book drive is organized by ...

My name is Alex and I'm simply an individual who happened across this wonderful organization. I'm a future librarian in Atlanta, Georgia who wants to give back in way that will matter.

We want to start a library in Africa because...

I cultivated my love of reading at a young age and want to give kids the opportunity to read who don't currently have the resources. Not only will a library bring joy and togetherness to a community, it will bring literacy and a desire for a better life.

About our African Partners...

The children in Lesotho, Africa will be receiving two libraries made up of a thousand books each. Lesotho is a landlocked country on the East coast of South Africa below the well-known city of Johannesburg. Specifically, the books will be going to Teresa James Primary School in Maseru and Ikaheng High School in Maseru.

Please contribute these kinds of books...

For the primary school the request is for: baby board books; dictionaries and encyclopedias; children's fiction and non-fiction; early readers (chapter books); and books with universal themes. The high school (grades 4-8) requests books at that reading level.

Here's how you can contribute your books...

I'll be building a donation box to place outside my house where donations can be left 24/7. (The donation box will be registered as a Little Free Library after the bookdrive.) If you live locally in the Atlanta area I would be more than happy to come collect donations from you as well. There will be future donation sites at public libraries.

We need to raise funds for shipping the books...

I plan to get the artist community involved by organizing an African themed photo-shoot where participants can either donate books or money. A bake sale is planned for later in the year. Feel free to contact me at for more information on donating.

Here are some ways that you can help...

The best way for you to get involved is through your donation of gently used children's books.
