African Library Project

Coca-Cola Scholars Alumni National Day of Service

04/01/2012 to 05/01/2012
Washington DC

The African Library Project brings gently used books to an African community that has lots of eager readers but very few books. Please help by collecting and delivering gently used books or by raising money to help pay for shipping to Africa. It only takes 1000 books and $500 to start a single library (and a little elbow grease!)

This book drive is organized by ...

The Coca-Cola Scholars Alumni. The scholarship foundation supports over 1,400 college students each year, with annual scholarships of $3.4 million through two nationally recognized programs on behalf of the Coca-Cola System.

The alumni build upon what the Foundation does, not only for freshmen Scholars, but also for alumni in different stages of life and career. The networking...the mentoring...the friendships...the collaborations to make the world better. This is the Coca Cola Scholar culture.

We want to start a library in Africa because...

In their daily lives Scholars contribute to making their world a better place. Each year, scholars across the world come together to support one common goal in the form of a National Day of Service. This year we are giving the most powerful tool in the world to children...books!

Please contribute these kinds of books...

We need to collect 1000 books to send to Malawi. We need to collect:
-300 preschool to 4th grade books, and
-700 4th grade to 8th grade books.

Here's how you can contribute your books...

On Saturday, April 14th please drop your books off at the Teaching for Change bookstore located inside Busboys and Poets on 14th and V Streets, NW in Washington, DC. We will be collecting the books inside the bookstore from 3-6pm.

If you can\'t make it on this day, please contact Nakeesha Seneb at nakeeshaseneb@aol.com to make other arrangements.

Scholars- please also fill out this brief survey for Carolyn, with the Scholars Foundation, indicating WHERE You are serving and what T’shirt size etc. so she can send those out before the Service Day. She needs this filled out no later than April 5th, so she can send us the t’shirts in time! Only participants will receive t’shirts. We will have them for you at The Teaching for Change Bookstore on the 14th. Here is the link to the survey: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/D9N9L9D

We need to raise funds for shipping the books...

We also need to collect $500 to pack and ship the books. You can help by contributing money. Please note that we are not a 501(c)(3) organization and we can not issue you a receipt for a tax deduction.

Here are some ways that you can help...

If you have children, look through their bookshelves and see what they no longer read.
Go to your public library. They often have books for sale for as little as $0.50.
Purchase new books at a local bookstore like Teaching for Change inside Busboys and Poets.
