African Library Project

Giving children opportunities, through the sharing of books.

01/20/2013 to 05/01/2013
Grand rapids MI

The African Library Project brings gently used books to an African community that has lots of eager readers but very few books. Please help by collecting and delivering gently used books or by raising money to help pay for shipping to Africa. It only takes 1000 books and $500 to start a single library (and a little elbow grease!)

This book drive is organized by ...

My name is Blessing Mushonga, I come from Zimbabwe (one of the countries African Library Project helps) I am a mother of 2 boys under the age of 4, and while my kids are privilledged to have plenty of books and more, I did not grow up with as many books at my disposal.

We want to start a library in Africa because...

Books open children\'s minds to dream beyond their own small worlds, they represent opportunities. In some parts of Africa, no one even worries about books, they are a luxury. Children are considered lucky if they have enough text books to share at school. Reading just for fun or to broaden minds, is done by the fortunate. So at the end of the day, those kids with no access to books do not get any opportunities to attain an education and a better life, the same goes for their children and it becomes a cycle. Please lets break this cycle of poverty with one book at a time.

About our African Partners...

We are partnering with Atibie-Kwahu Methodist School in Ghana. It is a primary school, so we need books from pre school to 6th grade level and the money for shipping. Please give whatever you can even a dollar will help.

Please contribute these kinds of books...

Educational games or puzzles are welcome too.

Here's how you can contribute your books...

You can email us, reach us on facebook or call, and if you are in the Grand Rapids area, I can come and pick the books up myself, that\'s no problem at all.

We need to raise funds for shipping the books...

We need to raise $500 for shipping the books.

Here are some ways that you can help...

Our goal is 1000 books, they can be gently used & in good condition. It\'s very easy to donate. Remember giving does not only have to be what you already have and needed to get rid off, sometimes we have to go into our own pockets and sacrifice a little, I know God will truly bless you. Thrift stores, garage sales, our own attics and garages are all places we can find affordable books to share with these kids. Together, we can do it.
