EWMS Teen Korps/Solana Beach Library Book Drive for Ghana

04/01/2012 to 05/01/2012
Solana Beach CA

The African Library Project brings gently used books to an African community that has lots of eager readers but very few books. Please help by collecting and delivering gently used books or by raising money to help pay for shipping to Africa. It only takes 1000 books and $500 to start a single library (and a little elbow grease!)

This book drive is organized by ...

Our book drive is a cooperative effort between the Earl Warren Middle School Teen Korps and the Solana Beach Library. Teen Korps is an organization dedicated to providing opportunities for teens to serve their community. The EWMS Teen Korps chapter is made up of students from Earl Warren Middle School in Solana Beach, a community north of San Diego, California. Solana Beach Library is a shared use library- it is both a branch of the San Diego County Library system serving the Solana Beach community and it serves as the Earl Warren Middle School Library.

We want to start a library in Africa because...

We know that having free access to books is not as common in other parts of the world as it is here in America. This is our way to make a difference in a country where books and other materials are in short supply or non-existent.

About our African Partners...

Our African partner is Twenedrase Community Library in Obo-Kwahu area of Ghana. Our library serves 450 students and the community.

Please contribute these kinds of books...

We are collecting Board Books for pre-school age, and paperback books for pre-school to 8th grades, plus puzzles, flash cards, educational games and school supplies, all in good condition.

Here's how you can contribute your books...

Bring your materials to the Solana Beach/Earl Warren Library, at 157 Stevens Avenue in Solana Beach. There is a collection bin in the lobby.

We need to raise funds for shipping the books...

We have secured a generous community member sponsor who has offered to sponsor the shipping costs for the book drive, so we thankfully do not have to raise funds.

Progress Report

Our Goal 1,000 books $0.00 fundraising
Results so far
(updated: 5/7/2012)
1085 books $$500 fundraising

We have had a wonderful response. A young man came all the way from Orange County to drop off 150 books. He and his project partner held a book drive at their school for our project! Way to go! We have our first sorting/packing party on Sunday, April 29. Then we will have an accurate count of materials. We will keep you posted!

We mailed the books on 5/7/2012 from the Solana Beach Post Office. They were so efficient, the 15 boxes were processed in 15 minutes. ALP says approximately $200 for 1000 paperback books, we came in at $201.65. Amazing!
