Taking Steps Forward (One Book At A Time)

02/14/2012 to 05/15/2012
Scarsdale NY

We are working with the African Library Project to provide books to eager readers in Africa who have very few books. Please help us by collecting and delivering gently used books or by raising money to help pay for shipping to Africa. It takes only 1000 books and $500 (plus a little elbow grease!) to start a single library and make a huge difference in children’s lives.

This book drive is organized by ...

Hi, my name is Rebecca and I\'m in the 7th grade. I live in New Rochelle, New York, and I live in a family of four. You\'re probably wondering why I would start a book drive, but I have a really great reason. I LOVE to read. I have tons of books in my house and all of them have been read, but what do I do with them? I figured that since I am becoming a bat mitzvah in my Jewish religion, I would like to donate books or start a book drive as my mitzvah project. So that\'s why I started \"Taking Steps Forward (One Book At A Time)\" to say that with every book that I get to donate, I am closer and closer to reaching my goal of making a library in Africa.

We want to start a library in Africa because...

Giving the books to Africa is huge for me because I know that African children are definitely in need. I also know that getting an education can be very tough there and it makes me feel sad to think that there are probably kids my age that don\'t even know how to read yet. By giving them this opportunity, I can give the kids the gift that I have. Reading is a gift, and can last a lifetime, so I want to make kids in Africa have this privilege that will last their whole life too.

Please contribute these kinds of books...

The type of books that I am looking for are paperback community library books at U.S. pre-school to 8th grade reading level. I would like this big variety of ages because I want to give books to all ages so that way everyone has a chance to get the gift of reading.

Here's how you can contribute your books...

If you would like to donate books to my book drive, you can send it to:

Rebecca Feldman
36 Rutledge Road
Scarsdale, NY

...You need to send me the books before May 15, 2012 because that is the day I am shipping the books.

We need to raise funds for shipping the books...

With books, also comes money. In order to pay the costs for the library, I need $200 to ship the books to New Orleans, and then I need $300 to ship the books internationally. Together, this is $500 and it seems like a whole lot. If you would be so generous to donate some money for the funds, I would be extremely thankful. You can send it to the same address that you would be donating books to.

Here are some ways that you can help...

You don\'t only have to help by donating your books or your money. You can also help by telling other people about the book drive and encourage them to donate to. This would be benefit to have.
