Girls to Books to Kids

01/09/2012 to 04/06/2012
Santa Rosa CA

The African Library Project brings gently used books to an African community that has lots of eager readers but very few books. Please help by collecting and delivering gently used books or by raising money to help pay for shipping to Africa. It only takes 1000 books and $500 to start a single library (and a little elbow grease!)

This book drive is organized by ...

We are a Girl Scout Troop collecting books and funds to send books to Africa to make a Primary Library (Pre K - 4th grade). We are doing this in order to earn our Silver Award, the highest award a Cadette Girl Scout can earn.

We want to start a library in Africa because...

We love our own school and public libraries and we want to share the joy of reading at your fingertips. As girls we have had libraries readily available and we feel that it is our responsibility to give other kids the same experience. Until we watched a video on this website, we hadn\'t realized that books could be a luxury, something that not everyone has access to.

About our African Partners...

We have a partner in Ghana. They are Manso Amenfi Primary and & Junior High School. Our African Partner in Ghana serves about 1600 readers. Our ideal mix for these two schools 2/3 PreK-4th grade books and about 1/3 4th-8th Grade. We hope we make a difference in the lives of the students at Manso Amenfi Primary and Junior High. Kids just like us will be able to have books just like ours! WooHoo! Kids around the WORLD!

Please contribute these kinds of books...

We want books that are appropriate from Pre-K to 8th grade.
PLEASE NO BOOKS THAT SHOW LOTS OF WEAR AND TEAR, TALK ABOUT AMERICAN OR RELIGIOUS HOLIDAYS, TALK ABOUT PUBLIC FIGURES (African American figures, such as MLK are accepted)AND RELIGION.

Results so far
(updated: 4-11-12)
1500 ish books $345 fundraising

We have a lot of books! (Almost halfway there!!!!!) Finally got some money!!! WOO HOO!!! We are on our way to success! We also got a grant that says if we build two libraries we only need to pay 700 dollars. The other half of our Girl Scout troop is building another library and they have a separate amount of books and funds. Since the due date is coming soon we are using some of our troop money. People in the community have given us some money. Exchange Bank, other Girl Scout troops, and other members of the community have donated money. :)

Going strong on books but need more money to ship them. Ahh so sad! Still, our troop is excited that we have rounded up so many books in such a short amount of time.

Acknowledgements
