African Library Project

We have a ton, they have none, donate your books and we'll all have some!

09/15/2011 to 03/15/2012
Portola Valley CA

The African Library Project brings gently used books to an African community that has lots of eager readers but very few books. Please help by collecting and delivering gently used books or by raising money to help pay for shipping to Africa. It only takes 1000 books and $500 to start a single library (and a little elbow grease!)

This book drive is organized by ...

We are Girl Scouts Troop 61712 (5th Grade) from Portola Valley who want to set up two libraries in Africa, as part of the African Library Project, and to earn our Bronze Award. We are first working towards collecting books for a library in Lesotho; The second library will be set up in Botswana. Our goal is to collect a minimum of 2,000 books and to raise $1,000 to ship them.

We want to start a library in Africa because...

We have such easy access to books and we all have books that we can part with, because we have read them many times, or because we are ready to read books at a different age level. How better use of these books than to donate them to children who live in areas where books are not easy to get. I hope you feel the same and can donate too? Thank you!

About our African Partners...

Our first library will be set up at the
Hloho Primary School in Khukhune, Lesotho. The Hloho Primary School serves 15 teachers and 302 students. The primary school serves Preschool through 4th grade students. This library will be open to the community as well, so we can include some books for secondary school (5th thru 8th grade).

The second library will be set up at a Primary School in Botswana. Details to follow.

Please contribute these kinds of books...

Please donate gently used books in English for reading level preschool to 4th grade. We cannot ship books on religion, US history, athletes mainly known in the US, or books on holidays.

Here's how you can contribute your books...

Collection boxes are at the following locations:
- The entrance of Ormondale School
- Library at Corte Madera School
- 405 Cervantes Road (corner with Shawnee Pass)

For pick-up or questions, send an email to sofie_vandeputte@yahoo.com, or contact the girl scout you know in Troop 61712.

We need to raise funds for shipping the books...

Stay tuned for a list of our fundraising efforts. They include:
- Sno cone sales at the Portola Valley Town Center on October 2.
- Bake sale, date to be announced.

We gladly accept any monetary donation. You can write a check to African Library Project, with Troop 61712 in the Memo line, and mail it Sofie Vandeputte, 405 Cervantes Road, Portola Valley, CA 94028, or give the check to the girl scout you know in Troop 61712.

Here are some ways that you can help...

Please, go through your book shelves, forward this link, spread the word, send books or $$ our way. Thank you very much for your support. And on behalf of the school community at Hloho Primary School, THANK YOU!
