Monte Vista African Library Project

01/13/2012 to 03/15/2012
Santa Barbara CA

We are working with the African Library Project to provide books to eager readers in Africa who have very few books. Please help us by collecting and delivering gently used books or by raising money to help pay for shipping to Africa. It takes only 1000 books and $500 (plus a little elbow grease!) to start a single library and make a huge difference in children’s lives.

This book drive is organized by ...

Mrs. Gavin, Mrs. Rice, and all the 5th graders at Monte Vista Elementary School.

We want to start a library in Africa because...

We want to make a difference by helping others, spreading our love of books, and empowering others. We also look forward to learning more about Africa and the world around us.

About our African Partners...

Our African partner is in Botswana at the Lesoma Primary School. This is a school that serves 105 students and 7 teachers.

Please contribute these kinds of books...

***WE CAN ONLY ACCEPT PAPERBACK BOOKS – NO HARD COVER***

We will be providing all the books for a new library at the Lesoma Primary School. The donated books need to be pre-school to 4th grade reading level.

We cannot donate to Africa: Adult paperback romances, books about U.S government, books with excessive slang, or books about American holidays.

Here's how you can contribute your books...

We will be accepting books from January 17 - March 12. Please drop off your books at Mrs. Gavin\'s room (Room 10) before or after school. We will have students who will sort and box up our books.
***Also, please mark your calendars for Thursday, March 15th @ 6 PM for our packing party!!! It\'s going to be a fun-filled night where students and parents will have a chance to write letters to be sent to our African partners.

We need to raise funds for shipping the books...

Students will raise funds through Bead for Life. We will be throwing a Bead for Life handmade jewelry party. Bead for Life is an exciting opportunity to learn more about and support impoverished Ugandan women who are lifting their families out of poverty with their handmade, high-quality beaded jewelry. The beads will be sold at our Bead for Life party on February 16. Come and shop for beautiful jewelry, listen to traditional Ugandan music, watch a short video, and support our project. We hope to see you there!

Here are some ways that you can help...

Please let friends and family know about Bead for Life party - the more the merrier! :)
