Simeon's Amazing Book Drive

03/09/2011 to 04/30/2011
Ellenwood GA

We are working with the African Library Project to provide books to eager readers in Africa who have very few books. Please help us by collecting and delivering gently used books or by raising money to help pay for shipping to Africa. It takes only 1000 books and $500 (plus a little elbow grease!) to start a single library and make a huge difference in children’s lives.

This book drive is organized by ...

My name is Simeon McKelvey I am in the 10th grade at Arabia Mountain High School in Lithonia, GA. I love to play baseball and football. I am collecting books because reading is that fundamental part in life that you have to know to be successful.

We want to start a library in Africa because...

I am doing this project as community service for my community and under privileged kid. Last year my godmother married a Ghanaian and will move to Ghana soon. I have met many wonderful people from there but I have also learned some startling facts. More than 1 in 3 adults cannot read.
176 million adults are unable to read and write.
47 million youths (ages 15-24) are illiterate
21 million adolescents are not in school.
32 million primary aged children are not in school either

About our African Partners...

Please contribute these kinds of books...

We are in need of books for a secondary school library. Which includes 4th to 8th grade reading levels. The books can be a novel, non-fiction or textbooks. The library will need books from fourth to eighth grade levels. Remember PAPERBACK books are lighter to ship, but we will happily accept all books of an appropriate level. We will also take National Geographic Magazine (less than 5 years old) and encyclopedias less than 15 years old. We will take Teacher's resource books, dictionaries, thesauruses, educational games and puzzles.

Here's how you can contribute your books...

You can email me at to arrange a pick up for your books if you live in the South Dekalb area. We will have additional drop off sites in Dekalb county.

We need to raise funds for shipping the books...

We need to raise about $200-$300 to ship 1000 books to a warehouse in New Orleans. From there we need another $300 to ship the books straight to the community library in Ghana, West Africa! The money is for the shipping costs.

Here are some ways that you can help...

Share about the book-drive to your friends who might be interested in supporting it: Contribute books/money. Prayer support. Words of encouragement. Ideas to collect more books and to raise the funds.
