Carly & SJSD's African Library Project

06/11/2018 to 08/17/2018
Bronx NY

We are working with the African Library Project to provide books to eager readers in Africa who have very few books. Please help us by collecting and delivering gently used books or by raising money to help pay for shipping to Africa. It takes only 1000 books and $500 (plus a little elbow grease!) to start a single library and make a huge difference in children’s lives.

This book drive is organized by ...

My name is Carly, and I am an elementary school teacher at St. Joseph's School for the Deaf in the Bronx, NY.

We want to start a library in Africa because...

My dear friend and colleague recently joined the Peace Corp to fulfill a life long dream. She is currently stationed in Sierra Leone and is sharing her passion for learning and teaching with an amazing group of people there. The school she is working at unfortunately does not have a quality library to serve the needs of the students and local residents. It is our goal, through this book drive, to help create an amazing library for them!

About our African Partners...

We are thrilled to be collecting books to help create a library at AD Wurie Memorial Secondary School in Lunsar, Sierra Leone. The school has over 1,200 students, some of whom walk over 10km (6.2 miles) to get to school everyday!
Currently, AD Wurie has less than 200 books in the whole school. Most of these books are text books that date from the 1960s. Additionally, because the books that they do have are so out of date, teachers spend their own money on books, using much of their monthly salary which is less than $150 per month.
There are very few libraries in the entire country and there are no public libraries in Lunsar. The creation of the library at AD Wurie will not only help the students, but will also be able to serve as a library to the surrounding local residents.

Please contribute these kinds of books...

We are in need of the following types of books:
• Paperback easy readers
• Paperback children’s picture books
• Paperback juvenile literature/Chapter books
• K-8 textbooks (English, math, geography & science)
• Encyclopedias & atlases (post 1990)
• Paperback dictionaries

Here's how you can contribute your books...

We will be holding our book drive from June 11th until August 17th. If you are interested in donating books please bring them to St. Joseph's School for the Deaf at 1000 Hutchinson River Parkway Bronx NY 10465 or please contact me to set up a meeting where I can pick-up the books from you.

We need to raise funds for shipping the books...

In addition to the 1,200 books we are aiming to collect, we also need to raise $550 to cover the cost of shipping the books to Sierra Leone. If you are interested in donating money to help cover this cost please go to our GoFundMe page: https://www.gofundme.com/carly039s-african-library-project

Here are some ways that you can help...

There are many different ways that you can help us reach our goal! You can donate books, donate money, ask friends and family to donate books or money, and you can share our website with others who you think might be interested.
