Malawi Library Book Drive

03/27/2018 to 05/26/2018
LOS ALTOS HILLS CA

We are working with the African Library Project to provide books to eager readers in Africa who have very few books. Please help us by collecting and delivering gently used books or by raising money to help pay for shipping to Africa. It takes only 1000 books and $500 (plus a little elbow grease!) to start a single library and make a huge difference in children’s lives.

We want to start a library in Africa because...

We decided to support a school in Malawi to ensure that other kids had an opportunity to read books too. We have realized we have the power to change things, to make the world better, we just need to care enough and take action. As Martin Luther King said, "The opposite of good is not evil, the opposite of good is indifference."

About our African Partners...

The books will be going to Ndirande Hill Primary School in Malawi. This school serves about 2,000+ students from 1st to 8th grade. It's a semi-urban school, where parents often live on less than a dollar a day, leading to a lot of problems for the learners.

Please contribute these kinds of books...

We're collecting books that are pre-school to 8th grade reading level.

Here's a wish list: https://tinyurl.com/africanlibrarywishlist

Please, DON’T SEND but donate elsewhere:
-Books that are filled with small, dense print that might be too intimidating or boring for the age level
-Books with lots of slang, which may be difficult for English learners to follow
-Books for very young children that have many references to appliances and electronic gadgets
-Adult paperback romance novels
-Books about United States or Canadian history or government (but DO SEND books about African-Americans)
-Books about North American or religious holidays (Easter, Halloween, Christmas, 4th of July, Thanksgiving, April Fools Day, Valentine’s Day, Chanukah, etc.)
-Books that evangelize or promote a particular religion
-Magazines except for children's educational magazines and National Geographics less than 5 years old

Here's how you can contribute your books...

We're looking for new and gently used books for 1st to 8th grade reading level.

(1) Clean up your library at home! Go through your books at home and choose those that your child no longer read. You can do this with your child and take this as an opportunity to talk about the children in Malawi.

(2) Go to your public library's used books sale and choose some books, then drop them off at school!

(3) Get books at a local bookstore or online and drop them off at school! Here's a list of desirable books: https://tinyurl.com/africanlibrarywishlist

(4) Email your friends and family and invite them to donate gently used or new books as well!

There will be collection boxes placed at the front office at BCS North and South campuses and at Learning Links' lobby.
ALL BOOKS MUST BE DROPPED OFF AT SCHOOL BY TUESDAY MAY 22ND.

We need to raise funds for shipping the books...

It takes only 1,000 books and $500 for shipping to support literacy in Malawi and make a huge difference in children’s lives! If you don't have the time to shop for books but still want to support the library, then please consider donating funds and we'll purchase the books!
