We are working with the African Library Project to provide books to eager readers in Africa who have very few books. Please help us by collecting and delivering gently used books or by raising money to help pay for shipping to Africa. It takes only 1000 books and $500 (plus a little elbow grease!) to start a single library and make a huge difference in children’s lives.

This book drive is organized by ...

The Ocean City High School National Honors Society aims to better the world through volunteerism, cooperation, hard-work, and generosity. Our members exhibit the core qualities of scholarship, character, leadership, and service. As a group, we work towards helping others to our utmost capabilities.

We want to start a library in Africa because...

We often take for granted what we have and utilize everyday-- like our education. We have the means to go to school, to learn and prosper, and, for most of us, to continue our education after high school. This privilege can often blind us to those who do not have the same opportunities. It is for this reason that NHS decided to organize a Book Drive. We hope that by gathering and organizing these books, we will be able to help others foster an intellectual curiosity. Education is a fundamental and essential human right, one we aim to make accessible to all.

About our African Partners...

Our books will be creating a Community Library for Unique Care School in Ghana. 80-90% of the students have no assistance at home after school due to the absence of their parents. Reading, as you can imagine, is not considered a priority.

Please contribute these kinds of books...

This library will be for all ages, and so we need books for various reading levels and of various genres. Overall, the books must be educational and academically enriching while also easy for non-native speakers to understand. With that being said, avoid books with small print or with lots of slang. Also, please make sure that these books are appropriate. Books should not exceed an 8th grade reading level. Donations are not limited to just novels, educational games and puzzles are also appreciated. Magazines are acceptable, but they must be academic, like the National Geographic for example.

Here's how you can contribute your books...

Please bring the books to Mrs. Dill's classroom (C210) and check off your name and how many books you'll be bringing on the sheet in the back corner. Books will be due by March 28th. Notify Falyn O'Brien as to how many books you are bringing. Preferably, the books should be brought in boxes to make the shipping process easier.

We need to raise funds for shipping the books...

NHS is selling t-shirts for $15, they will benefit this very important cause. Donations are also greatly appreciated, please make them out to the Ocean City High School National Honors Society.

Here are some ways that you can help...

We need at least 1,000 books and roughly $500, so the more help, the better. Donating the books is a great way to help, but we will also need assistance in the organizing of books (by reading level and by genre), the packaging of books, and then the eventual shipping of books. Volunteer hours will be given to those who donate the books and also to those who help package them.
