Watchung Hills's African Library Project

03/12/2018 to 05/15/2018
Warren NJ

We are working with the African Library Project to provide books to eager readers in Africa who have very few books. Please help us by collecting and delivering gently used books or by raising money to help pay for shipping to Africa. It takes only 1000 books and $500 (plus a little elbow grease!) to start a single library and make a huge difference in children’s lives.

This book drive is organized by ...

Our African Library Project is hosted by the Creative Writing Club and Folio Literary Magazine at Watchung Hills Regional High School. Both clubs serve to foster students' creative visions by encouraging a deep exploration of the literary arts. As students learn to establish their voices through producing original works of writing and immersion in the publication process, they develop a greater understanding of themselves and the world around them.

We want to start a library in Africa because...

Starting a library in Africa would allow us to make a difference in another community that, while at first glance, may seem dissimilar from our own. Yet, upon further examination, we are all tied together by stories of humanity and compassion. Books are magic; they are portals to another world and can serve as mirrors to examine our own communities. We strive to provide these looking glasses for students who do not have the same opportunities to access educational resources as most of us in the United States.

About our African Partners...

The Khubetsoana High School in Lesotho will be receiving our books. The library we are helping build serves as both a secondary school library for over 600 students, and will also be available for community members to access after school hours.

Please contribute these kinds of books...

Please contribute books that range from preschool to 8th grade reading level. We prefer paperback book donations due to ease of shipping, but all age-appropriate genres of books are accepted.

Here's how you can contribute your books...

All book donations can be dropped off in boxes in room 77 at Watchung Hills. Students from sending district/local middle schools will also have the opportunity to donate through the libraries at their schools. There will also be boxes set up at the Warren Township Library and Long Hill Library for books to be dropped off.
