CCMS Kids Zone African Library Project in Union City, CA!

03/05/2018 to 04/13/2018
Union City CA

We are working with the African Library Project to provide books to eager readers in Africa who have very few books. Please help us by collecting and delivering gently used books or by raising money to help pay for shipping to Africa. It takes only 1000 books and $500 (plus a little elbow grease!) to start a single library and make a huge difference in children’s lives.

This book drive is organized by ...

Cesar Chavez Middle School's after-school program, Kids Zone, is starting our service learning project of the year and we have chosen to partner with African Library Project to help build a library in Ghana! Our goal is to collect 1,000 books and fundraise $500 by April 13th to cover the cost of shipping. We plan to ship them out by April 20th. We are accepting preschool through 8th grade level children's books and prefer paperback donations, but we will accept hardcovers as well!

We want to start a library in Africa because...

Our school realizes the significance of reading and what the skill alone can do for our futures. We want to empower our students to think beyond themselves, gather for a good cause, and make an impact in the world -- together, as a community. Reading is a privilege and we want to spread the gift of literacy and optimism for the future. While we work everyday to improve our own literacy, we want to provide that same opportunity to a country that doesn't have as many opportunities as we do.

About our African Partners...

Our African Library partner in Ghana is Agotime Akpokope School. This is a primary and junior high school and the books will not only serve the school, but the greater Akpokope community as well. We would be serving about 3,500 people. We are the only book drive matched with this school and they applied back in October so we feel they have waited long enough to receive their own library!

The following was included in their application and we'd like to share a snippet into their daily life to anyone interested in learning about where these books will directly be going: “Students in Agotime Akpokope community start their day as early as 5:30am. They help sweep the house, wash the dishes, prepare breakfast and head to school at 7:30am. At school they clean the school compound, go to parade and march to classroom at 8:00am. Lesson begins at 8:15 after the teacher has marked the school register to know the students present and absent from school. Students go for first break at 10:15am. Classes continue again at 10:45 am till 12:30 pm where they go for their second break. At 1:00pm students return to class for teaching and learning. Students close from school at 2:00pm. Subjects taught during school hours are Math, English, Science, Creative art, Religious and Moral education, Citizenship education, Technical skill education, Home science and Agricultural science. After school the students help their parent on the farm and prepare dinner at 5:00pm. After dinner students sit in their home and revise their note given to them at school, do their homework, and research on topics in subjects taught them at school. With a well-equipped library in the community, students will be motivated to go there to research and broaden their horizon.”

Please contribute these kinds of books...

This school in particular is asking for textbooks of all subjects (ex. math, science, history, etc), encyclopedias, novels, and children's books. They asked for books from preschool to 8th grade level in their application and we'd like to honor that to the best of our ability. All genres are accepted within this age group.

Here's how you can contribute your books...

From Monday. March 5th through Friday, April 13th, we will be accepting donations at the front office, in the media center, and in the A-wing at Cesar Chavez Middle School in Union City. Tips for Other Book Drive Organizers

We put together a thorough presentation about the African Library Project to educate our Kids Zone students about the project before beginning the book drive. This helped the students make connections and care about the project before we began the heart-work!
