Christian's Book Drive for Ghana

We are working with the African Library Project to provide books to eager readers in Africa who have very few books. Please help us by collecting and delivering gently used books or by raising money to help pay for shipping to Africa. It takes only 1000 books and $500 (plus a little elbow grease!) to start a single library and make a huge difference in children’s lives.

My name is Christian Daley, and I live in San Jose California. I am a sophomore at Pioneer High school.

April 14, 2011: I will be shipping the books in just two weeks and am in the final stages of fundraising to pay for the shipping. As little as $1 is sufficient to ship two books! We want to start a library in Africa because...

I greatly enjoy reading, and I live in a community where books are in abundance. Being able to read has helped me learn, and has provided me with many hours of enjoyment. However, in Africa, books are far less abundant and many people do not have regular access to reading materials. I want to help provide people in Africa with books to read so that they may have an increased opportunity to enjoy reading and learning.

Please contribute these kinds of books...

We are starting a community library. This means we need fiction and non-fiction books from pre-school to eighth grade reading level. We will gladly accept textbooks, teacher's resource books, encyclopedias (less than 15 years old) and dictionaries. You can also contribute educational games and puzzles.

We cannot donate to Africa: Adult paperback romances, books about U.S government, books with excessive slang, or books about American religious holidays.

Here's how you can contribute your books...

You can drop off book donations on the front porch of my house. The address is 6264 Desert Flame Dr. San Jose, Ca. Alternatively, email me and I will be happy to come pick up your donation.

We need to raise funds for shipping the books...

We need to raise a total of $500–$600 to cover shipping costs. Part of this money will be used to ship books to the African Library Project's warehouse in New Orleans, and the rest will be used to ship the books to Ghana.

Here are some ways that you can help...

Donate books and/or money. Donations of just 1 dollar will be greatly appreciated! I am especially reaching out to fellow Pioneer High school students to donate a book and a buck. Spread the word to other people you know and refer them to this website.

April 14, 2011: I am currently packing the books for shipping. The total packed is 809 books, and I have a few more boxes still to pack!


Los Alamitos elementary school parents, students, and staff donated 650 of the books. Thank you Los Alamitos!

JDM Packing Supplies in San Jose donated labels for shipping and gave discounts on packing supplies to help me get the books ready to ship. Thank you JDM and Becky Alviso at JDM for your support!
