Calabasas High School's African Library Project

10/19/2017 to 12/05/2017
Calabasas CA

We are working with the African Library Project to provide books to eager readers in Africa who have very few books. Please help us by collecting and delivering gently used books or by raising money to help pay for shipping to Africa. It takes only 1000 books and $500 (plus a little elbow grease!) to start a single library and make a huge difference in children’s lives.

This book drive is organized by ...

Hi! I'm Kayla Gerber and I am running my book drive at Calabasas High School in Calabasas, California. I am 16 years old and I absolutely love to read. I have been passionate about books since I was a little girl. I started a club at my high school called "Billions of Books" and one of the projects we wanted to do was donate books to children. When I found the African Library Project, I immediately wanted to help out. I want to give children a chance to explore reading books at a young age, one that I had and continue to love.

We want to start a library in Africa because...

Starting a library in Africa matters so much to me because I have always been so passionate about reading. I want others to share my interest in books and exploring other worlds just by turning a page. I want these children in to let their imagination run wild.

About our African Partners...

Our books are being donated to a library in Kenya, Africa. English and Kiswahili are the official languages in Kenya. We will create a library for Bware Secondary School. Both boys and girls will get to enjoy the books we are shipping to Africa.

Please contribute these kinds of books...

We will also be collecting letters to share with the children in Kenya. Include personal notes and pictures of yourself!

Here's how you can contribute your books...

We started our African Library Project on October 19th and we want to ship all our books on December 5th. We are currently collecting books from libraries in the Los Angeles Area. If you have any books, one place to bring them is Calabasas High School located in Calabasas, California.

We need to raise funds for shipping the books...

For fundraising, my club at school, Billions of Books, will have a bake sale to raise the $500 we need to ship out our books for our African Library Project. Contact me for more information if you are willing yo participate or donate money.

Here are some ways that you can help...

Currently we have just finished setting up all our boxes and flyers around our school campus. I have contacted all the libraries in Los Angeles for children's books. Many are collecting books and will call me soon to come pick them up. We are planning our bake sale for shipping money to be held in two weeks

Help us donate 1,000 books and create our own library in Africa!
