Carmel High School African Library Project

Carmel IN

We are working with the African Library Project to provide books to eager readers in Africa who have very few books. Please help us by collecting and delivering gently used books or by raising money to help pay for shipping to Africa. It takes only 1000 books and $500 (plus a little elbow grease!) to start a single library and make a huge difference in children’s lives.

This book drive is organized by ...

We are a group of Carmel High School students who are working to start a library in Ghana.

We want to start a library in Africa because...

As a child, I found reading to be my form of escape. If you ask anyone, they'd tell you that I had a book with me at all times of day–I held onto the stories as my best friends. When I found out about ALP, I was so excited to share the power that reading gave me with others so I decided to start a group at my school.

With this project, we are hoping to share that love of reading and learning with the world. We are very fortunate to have the opportunity to go to school every day, and by starting this library, we can bring that to others. We believe that education changes the world and we're determined to make a difference–no matter how big or small.

About our African Partners...

Our ALP partner is Ghana Nikwanta Senior High Technical. This is a secondary school with about 650 students who are working to improve their English. The library will be located in a separate room in the school and will serve both students and teachers. The school consists of a kindergarten, primary, and two streams of secondary school. It's located in the district capital, though most students come from surrounding villages and stay with relatives or friends. Their main medium of communication/ instruction is English; however, most students have to learn both spoken and written English, so this library will give them the tools to improve their skills.

Please contribute these kinds of books...

The books are for a secondary school library, so books should be at a 2nd to 8th grade reading level.

Here's how you can contribute your books...

Please reach out to Raiha or Lenna (contact info below). If you go to Carmel High School, you can bring them to Ms. Overbeck's room–Room E132.

We need to raise funds for shipping the books...

We are selling tuliptrees for $10 each. If you are interested, reach out to either Lenna or Raiha, and you can pay in either cash or check. If you would like to donate, any amount of money would go a long way so we can reach our $500 goal. You can donate directly through our fundraising page: https://www.gofundme.com/chs-african-library-project

Here are some ways that you can help...

We would appreciate any book or monetary donations. If you could, please look through your bookshelves to see if you have any childhood books you no longer use. Any books or any amount of money would be a great help to the cause! If you have books, reach out to either of the leaders. If you want to donate, you can give your money to us or donate on our GoFundMe!

If you are interested in getting involved with the process, we would love to have you! We have meetings every Wednesday in Room H320, and if you'd like to be part of the club, please contact either of us officers.
