Holly's Books for Ghana!

01/13/2011 to 04/30/2011
Warminster PA

We are working with the African Library Project to provide books to eager readers in Africa who have very few books. Please help us by collecting and delivering gently used books or by raising money to help pay for shipping to Africa. It takes only 1000 books and $500 (plus a little elbow grease!) to start a single library and make a huge difference in children’s lives.

This book drive is organized by ...

By me, Holly Myers an Assistant Librarian in Pennsylvania.

In Sub Sahara Africa:
More than 1 in 3 adults cannot read.
176 million adults are unable to read and write.
47 million youths (ages 15-24) are illiterate
21 million adolescents are not in school.
32 million primary aged children are not in school either

About our African Partners...

Our partner is a Kwame Danso Community Library in Ghana Africa! Kwame Danso is the district capital of Sene District. The library is in a school that teaches 5,000 students. It is a small community that enjoys reading, storytelling and playing games! They are very excited about the upcoming library!

Please contribute these kinds of books...

We are building a community library! The library will need books from pre-school levels to eighth grade levels. Remember PAPERBACK books are lighter to ship, but we will happily accept all books of an appropriate level. We will also take National Geographic Magazine (less then 5 years old) and encyclopedias less then 15 years old. We will take Teacher's resource books, dictionaries, thesauruses, educational games and puzzles!

Thank you for your help, but we cannot accept: Adult paperback romances, books about American religious holidays (Christmas, Easter, Chanakuah, etc), books about American government and books with a lot of slang, which might be difficult to an English learner.

Here's how you can contribute your books...

If one of the drop off locations doesn't work for you, call or email me. I will be happy to come collect your donated books for you!

We need to raise funds for shipping the books...

We need to raise about $200-$300 to ship 1000 books to a wharehouse in New Orleans. From there we need about another $300 to ship the books straight to the community library in Ghana, South Africa! The money is for the shipping costs.

Here are some ways that you can help...

Donate books, donate money, ask others to donate books or money. Read! Read to your children, have your children read to other children. Spread the word!
