Shaker Heights High School Global Development Club Book Drive

08/31/2017 to 11/27/2017
Cleveland OH

The African Library Project brings gently used books to an African community that has lots of eager readers but very few books. Please help by collecting and delivering gently used books or by raising money to help pay for shipping to Africa. It only takes 1000 books and $500 to start a single library (and a little elbow grease!)

This book drive is organized by ...

Global Development Club at Shaker Heights High School initiates different efforts in the Shaker Heights and Greater Cleveland Communities with the goal of promoting any of the 17 United Nations Global Goals. We do this through hosting events and initiatives, raising funds to support international efforts, and educating the local community. The Global Goals were ratified by the United Nations in 2015 and are hoped to be met by 2030. Other goals that we have worked on include Reduced Inequalities, Sustainable Cities and Communities, and Zero Hunger. This book drive is meant promote goal #4, Quality Education.

We want to start a library in Africa because...

Helping to stock this African library falls in line with the 4th Global Goal which strives to ensure that every child in every corner of the earth has the opportunity to receive a quality education and build the life they choose to live. Helping increase literacy and give these students access to one of the most used languages in the world is a vital step towards achieving this global goal. Doing this through the African Library Project ensures that the books we provide go to a library that is invested in by the local community, ensuring that the library will last as a valuable source of education for students living in these rural parts of Kenya.

About our African Partners...

Our books will go the Matagaro Mixed Day Secondary School in Kenya. This is secondary school for both boys and girls. Their days often go from 7 am to 5:30 pm, and Tuesdays and Thursdays are reserved for extra curricular and library reading time (which is why they need a top notch library!).

Please contribute these kinds of books...

Books at a United States 4th through 8th grade reading level. Textbooks, educational magazines, educational games, and puzzles are fitting as well.

Here's how you can contribute your books...

Book collection locations will be in the Eli Gallery of Shaker Heights High School and near the main office of Woodbury school. Collection boxes will be in place from August 31st to late November (exact date to be announced).

We need to raise funds for shipping the books...

We will be having fundraising at the Shaker 100th homecoming festival, selling books that we cannot send to Kenya and other goods. We would love to have as much support as we can get! We will also be having a number of bake sales in the high school, so make sure you or your student keep an eye out for announcements regarding these.

Here are some ways that you can help...

We will need books, and locations to donate are listed above. Some locations are at different schools, so you can send books with your student. Finally, around late November, we will be having a book packing party with pizza and a bake sale to prepare the books for shipping. Further details will be provided later for this, so keep an eye out
