African Library Project

Reese Walker's Kenya Book Drive

06/16/2017 to 12/05/2017
Danville VA

The African Library Project brings gently used books to an African community that has lots of eager readers but very few books. Please help by collecting and delivering gently used books or by raising money to help pay for shipping to Africa. It only takes 1000 books and $500 to start a single library (and a little elbow grease!)

This book drive is organized by ...

I am an avid reader and writer and love storytelling. I believe it's a thing that brings everyone together and it is crucial that everyone has access to books and stories. I decided to sign up for ALP because I want to give the gift of stories to anyone I am able. I am from Danville, Virginia and I have involved my high school honor society at Westover Christian Academy in the entire process of this drive.

We want to start a library in Africa because...

As I said before - children need stories. As a young kid myself, I always turned to them in any high or low point in my life and continue to do so. Providing education and tales and guidance through books in Africa is a drive I am so passionate about and relate to.

About our African Partners...

Our library is in Kenya and is a secondary library (which means we accept 4th grade through 8th grade reading material.) If you decide to donate books, please refrain from any American or Canadian history or any dialectical prose which may prove hard for English learners to understand.

Please contribute these kinds of books...

As a Secondary library (4th to 8th grade material) we would love to receive the following types of books: Children's or young teen fiction/ non-fiction, any educational material (i.e. math, science, English etc. over 4th grade level / please only donate historical education books if they pertain to Africa), Young literature, Dictionaries, encyclopedias (less than 15 years old), mental and physical health books, books with basic morals and life lessons that are universal, magazines about kids science or literature, educational games or puzzles

Here's how you can contribute your books...

Our official start date was June 16th, 2017. All books must be collected, sorted and packed by December 5th. If you would like to donate, please contact us by email at: reesaywalker926@gmail.com.

We need to raise funds for shipping the books...

We plan to set up many book stations around Danville, Virginia and our school Westover Christian Academy where anyone can donate books they believe fit our guidelines. You can participate by donating money by check or cash, or donate books that are appropriate. If you would like to donate or help out manually, please contact us at: reesaywalker926@gmail.com

Here are some ways that you can help...

Donations are not the only way to help! You can donate books or money, but you can be very useful in other ways including: Making signs and posting them around asking for books. Helping sort and collect books. Put up flyers showing awareness. Even telling people you know about our drive and referring them to our page. And if there are any other areas you feel you could help, contact us at: reesaywalker926@gmail.com
