African Library Project

Lauren and Jared's Kenya Community Library Drive

6/12/17 to 11/20/2017
Westfield NJ

The African Library Project brings gently used books to an African community that has lots of eager readers but very few books. Please help by collecting and delivering gently used books or by raising money to help pay for shipping to Africa. It only takes 1000 books and $500 to start a single library (and a little elbow grease!)

This book drive is organized by ...

We are high school students in Westfield, New Jersey. This is our second book drive with African Library Project; the first one was a few years ago when Jared collected over 1,200 books that started a primary school library in Swaziland.

We want to start a library in Africa because...

We both have always loved to read and can't imagine what it would be like without having access to books at all. Starting a community library in Kenya will give many people a better education and more opportunities in life. This library will make a lasting impact on so many in Kenya.

About our African Partners...

Kenya is a diverse country, about the size of France with a population of 46 million. Although many languages are spoken in Kenya, employers in Kenya require a high level of English proficiency, and newspapers are written primarily in English. Knowing English is key to getting a good job. Primary education is free in Kenya but schools charge fees for supplies which puts a burden on families. All students have to pass exams in English to advance to the next level. Large classes and limited materials make education challenging. Only 2% of schools have libraries. Kenya has extreme income inequality with 43% of the population living below the poverty line.

Please contribute these kinds of books...

Our goal is to collect 1,000 books!
For a community library, we need books that range from pre-school to 8th grade reading level. We are also accepting dictionaries, educational games, puzzles and flashcards.

Here's how you can contribute your books...

Please contact us and we will be happy to pick up your books or you can always drop them at our house.

We need to raise funds for shipping the books...

Monetary donations in any amount will help pay for shipping costs.
