African Library Project

For the Love of Education Book Drive

06/01/2017 to 11/10/2017
Santa Fe Springs CA

The African Library Project brings gently used books to an African community that has lots of eager readers but very few books. Please help by collecting and delivering gently used books or by raising money to help pay for shipping to Africa. It only takes 1000 books and $500 to start a single library (and a little elbow grease!)

This book drive is organized by ...

My name is Jordon Garcia and I am a current student at La Habra High School. I am from Santa Fe Springs in California. I am hosting a book drive that will help the kids in Swaziland, Africa. I am requesting gently used books that will provide education for those kids in preschool through the fourth grade. Fundraising and shipping costs also play a factor in this book drive. I need a minimum of $500 for shipping costs. Donations are welcome to help support and sponsor fundraising events. Anything and everything is appreciated and I am so grateful for this opportunity to share books and help build a library for the children of Africa.

We want to start a library in Africa because...

Books are the foundation of an education. Without books, children would not be able to access the proper tools that they need in order to learn and grow. Sharing a book is changing a child's life. Every child should have the equal opportunity to an education. I have a love for books and I enjoy reading so it inspired me to empower literacy in underdeveloped countries. Building a library in Africa is important to me because it can change and potentially better children's lives. If I have the opportunity to make a difference in someone's life than I am going to give my 110%.

Please contribute these kinds of books...

I am collecting books in order to create a primary library which consists of books that would help kids in preschool to fourth grade. Below are some examples of what I am looking for:
- Baby board books
- Children’s picture books
- Children’s fiction and non-fiction
- Early readers
- BIG books
- Teacher's resource books for school libraries
- Children’s dictionaries/picture dictionaries
- Encyclopedias less than 15 years old
- Children’s encyclopedias/picture encyclopedias
- Children’s thesauruses
- Paperback textbooks in math, English, geography, health, and science at the appropriate level (kindergarten to 6th grade). Send no more than two copies of any textbook; these will be used for teacher resources.
- Books with universal themes (friendships, animals, love)
- Children's books teaching life skills about health, hygiene, adolescence, and careers
- Accurate up-to-date atlases
- Books about Africa or African-Americans
- Educational children's science and literary magazines in good condition
- Brain teasers, flash cards, educational games and puzzles

Here's how you can contribute your books...

Contact me by email and I will let you know the drop off location!

We need to raise funds for shipping the books...

As I mentioned earlier, I will need $500 for shipping costs. First, the books will be sent to the ALP warehouse in New Orleans and from there the books will be shipped to Swaziland. In addition, donations to help have fundraising events are also requested. Any donation is greatly appreciated. You can contact me by email in order to learn more or donate. All donations will go towards fundraising or the shipping costs.

Here are some ways that you can help...

Besides donating books or money, there are many more ways to help! Simply just spreading the word about my book drive would mean a lot to me. Getting other people involved such as family and friends so I can reach my goal would be appreciated. Another way to be helpful would be to come to a fundraising event and bring a friend or two! And if you cannot donate books or money, you can definitely donate supplies such as paper, ink, shipping boxes, etc.
