African Library Project

"KETCH the Reading Bug" Book Drive!

03/27/2017 to 05/25/2017
Menlo Park CA

The African Library Project brings gently used books to an African community that has lots of eager readers but very few books. Please help by collecting and delivering gently used books or by raising money to help pay for shipping to Africa. It only takes 1000 books and $500 to start a single library (and a little elbow grease!)

This book drive is organized by ...

KETCH = Kip, Emily, Tommy, Cricket and Henry :)

Emily, Tommy and Henry Whitenight attend St Francis High School in Mountain View, CA; and Cricket and Kip Gorey attend Menlo Atherton High School in Menlo Park, CA. The five of us have been friends since first meeting at Oak Knoll Elementary School.

We want to start a library in Africa because...

We are starting a library in Malawi because of the vital role reading provides to an individual's imagination, education, vocabulary, memory, analytical skills and inner peace - all of which, ultimately lead to personal empowerment. No matter your reading style, we all enjoy a great story!

About our African Partners...

The Mulika Scholarship Foundation Library will be open to all secondary school students within the Usisya, Malawi environs; and who are estimated at about 500 students. The Library will have a capacity of hosting about 40 students daily.

Please contribute these kinds of books...

Our focus is on books for a secondary school library, so predominantly books appropriate for 4th through high school aged children. Specifically in the following areas:

- English literature books (story books or novels) appropriate for age 10 to 17
- Mathematics
- Physical Science
- Physics
- Chemistry
- Biology
- Life Sciences
- Earth Sciences
- English Grammar
- World Geography
- World History
- World Atlases
- Encyclopedias (should be less than 4 years old)
- Thesauruses
- English Dictionaries
- Computer Science

Here's how you can contribute your books...

Although we have finished collecting books - yay! - we are still accepting cash/check donations for shipping btwn Menlo Park and Louisiana.

The shipping costs collected to date, will cover the freight from Louisiana to Malawi.

We need to raise funds for shipping the books...

In addition to book donations, we are raising the $500 it costs to ship the books (media rate) from Menlo Park, CA to New Orleans, LA. The boxes of books then go onto a container ship from there to South Africa where they are picked up for delivery to Malawi.
To make a donation towards these shipping costs, checks can be made out to either Kate Gorey (kate@goreys.com) or Missy Whitenight (missy.whitenight@gmail.com). Please email to make arrangements for pick-up or delivery.

Here are some ways that you can help...

Three ways you can help us meet our library goals: (1) Please donate new or gently used books; (2) contribute $5-25 (or more) toward shipping; and (3) share our book drive link with your friends and family!
