Youth in Mount Moorosi, Lesotho Book Drive

10/12/2010 to 12/6/2010
Severna Park MD

We are working with the African Library Project to provide books to eager readers in Africa who have very few books. Please help us by collecting and delivering gently used books or by raising money to help pay for shipping to Africa. It takes only 1000 books and $500 (plus a little elbow grease!) to start a single library and make a huge difference in children’s lives.

This book drive is organized by ...

We are friends of Erin McCord a Peace Corp Volunteer in Lesotho who is promoting positive habits, including reading, for the youth of Mount Moorosi, Lesotho. The Mount Moorosi Youth Center has few useful books and the youth love to read and look at photos in books. We, her friends and family from Severna Park (including the 2011 Confirmation Class of Woods Church ) are having a book drive and a rockin' benefit on November 6th from 3 - 6 pm at Holy Grounds.

We want to start a library in Africa because...

We know that reading is the key to learning and job opportunities for the Lesotho Youth, so we want to help.

About our African Partners...

The youth in Mount Moorosit in the Southern district of Quithing in Lesotho will recieve these books at their youth center. One of our own Severna Park residents, Erin McCord, is a volunteer with the youth there until August 2011, so she will work with the local youth to set up the library. The local team will keep the youth center and the library going in the future.

Please contribute these kinds of books...

Books at U,S. 4th to 8th grade reading level. Series like Goosebumps and Harry Potter are a good example. School books in reading, history and all levels of math are espcially helpful because students do not have regular school book for reference. Fashion, health and fitness magazines are also popular with the secondary student youth. Educational games and puzzles are also a bit hit!

Here's how you can contribute your books...

Drop your books by the Severna Park Community Center any Sunday between 9 am and 11 am in the entryway or foyer (there should be collection boxes) OR drop them by the McCord's house at 104 St. Francis Court, Severna Park, MD anytime. You can leave them in front of the garage if the weather is suitable and we are not home.

We need to raise funds for shipping the books...

Our fundraiser is a Musical Benefit for Lesotho on Saturday, November 6, 2010 from 3 - 6 pm at the Holy Grounds at (Woods) Severna Park Community Center. We will have live music by BHA- Rick Hogue's Band, Jeff Casey, Cole Cash, Korey Johnson, Pandomonia and possibly other accoustic musicians for a $5 cover charge. There will be African jewelry and wristbands to buy as well as BBQ sandwiches and baked goods with all proceeds going towards the shipment of books.

Here are some ways that you can help...

We'd love you to share the word about the benefit and come out and have fun while doing something valuable for the youth of Lesotho! If you have books, bring them to the benefit or drop off points.

250 books $0 fundraising

There are lots of people bringing books, really awesome books, to the community center on Sundays and some dropping them off at my house. Katie's book club friends have been amazing in getting the word out and going through their own books. B.I.G. in Parole also offered to let us look through their shelves. Devin and Shane have given all their books too!
