Empower Thru English Reading

02/10/2017 to 06/01/2017
Phoenix AZ

The African Library Project brings gently used books to an African community that has lots of eager readers but very few books. Please help by collecting and delivering gently used books or by raising money to help pay for shipping to Africa. It only takes 1000 books and $500 to start a single library (and a little elbow grease!)

This book drive is organized by ...

Hello, my name is Senou Kounouho. I am 13 years old and live in Arizona. This book drive is organized by my family and me.

We want to start a library in Africa because...

It's a way of giving back. All my life I have had access to books that inspired my imagination and took me to distant lands filled with fantastic creatures. Reading taught me valuable moral and transformed how I viewed the world.
At the other extreme, my dad grew up in a village. No electricity; no plumbing; no internet; no library; and no books. No books to learn English with. No books to cuddle up with before going to bed. No books to help learn how to write. But my dad did have the perseverance to grow, and under the right circumstances he made his way here, to America, the “Land of Opportunity”.
Unluckily many other capable kids are not getting the same chance to learn as my dad did. This book drive will bring them not only one step closer to the power of literacy, but also to self sufficiency and success in life.

About our African Partners...

The books collected in this drive will go to St Mary’s Karonga Girls’ Secondary (6-12) school in Karonga, Malawi. This secondary school has a library building, but no books. Our job is to furnish this library.
St Mary’s Karonga Girls’ Secondary school has been open for about half a year (starting in November 2016).  It is located near Mwenilondo Trade centre in northern Malawi. These girls start their day at 4:00am in the morning and end at 8:30pm.
The library will be opened to enhance the study of English, especially because the classes are taught in English.

Please contribute these kinds of books...

4th to 8th grade reading level books, along with books that focus on geography, history, life skills, social studies, biology, physics, chemistry, and agriculture would be greatly appreciated.
