Legg and Viers Help Lesotho's Dream Come True

02/10/2017 to 05/01/2017
Lakeland FL

We are working with the African Library Project to provide books to eager readers in Africa who have very few books. Please help us by collecting and delivering gently used books or by raising money to help pay for shipping to Africa. It takes only 1000 books and $500 (plus a little elbow grease!) to start a single library and make a huge difference in children’s lives.

This book drive is organized by ...

We are South McKeel Academy, a charter school in Lakeland, Florida where we do a lot of hands-on learning. We value kindness, mindfulness, teamwork, student self-time-management, and making learning fun. After learning about compassion and empathy we wanted to impact a part of our world in a positive way. Our goal is to provide more opportunities to African children to further their education.

We want to start a library in Africa because...

We want to start a library in Africa because we know that education is integral to success in life and ending the poverty cycle across the world. South McKeel Academy is a great school where good education is highly valued, we know the kind of doors a good education can open for people.

About our African Partners...

Lesotho is a tiny country nestled in the middle of South Africa. Founded as a kingdom in the 1820s, Lesotho was a British protectorate for almost 100 years (1868- 1966) before regaining independence in 1966. Today, the country is one of the world’s smallest constitutional monarchies.
In general, public schools in Africa charge tuition at all levels of schooling but since 2000, primary school education in Lesotho has been free and as a result, enrollment has increased. Unfortunately, students and parents face many issues paying tuition at the high school level. Only about a third of high school-age children attend school due to lack of funding and space.

Please contribute these kinds of books...

Books at U.S. pre-school to 4th grade reading level. Board books, picture books, chapter books, novels for younger audiences, recent Atlases, educational books and flashcards, books for teachers, and ESPECIALLY books featuring Africans or African-Americans. We are collecting new or gently used books. We also need to raise $500 to ship the boxes to Lesotho.

Here's how you can contribute your books...

Please consider purchasing a book to donate during our BookFair. A collection box will be located outside the library door.
