Ohlone Emkhuzweni Book Drive

01/26/2017 to 03/15/2017
Palo Alto CA

The African Library Project brings gently used books to an African community that has lots of eager readers but very few books. Please help by collecting and delivering gently used books or by raising money to help pay for shipping to Africa. It only takes 1000 books and $500 to start a single library (and a little elbow grease!)

This book drive is organized by ...

We are at Ohlone Elementary School, ohlone@pausd.org, in Palo Alto, California. At Ohlone all the classes are mixed grades. We do a lot of hands-on learning. We value kindness, mindfulness, teamwork, student self-time-management, and making learning fun. Ohlone also has a farm with animals that the students study and help care for.

We are three rooms that are buddy classes. One room is Room 26, made up of 4th and 5th graders, another room is Room 12, which has 2nd and 3rd graders. Room 3 is Kindergarten and 1st grade. We regularly get together. Sometimes we read together, and sometimes we do projects with each other. Last year we put on a flash mob for the whole school.

We want to start a library in Africa because...

We think that having many books in a school is important because reading is so important to learning. Reading lots of different books helps students learn about different things, helps increase vocabulary, and helps stimulate imagination. Reading helps students learn about the world and sparks their curiosity. We think reading is essential for life.

About our African Partners...

We are sending books to Emkuzweni Primary School in Swaziland, Africa. At Emkuzweni Primary School, they have 200 books and 601 students. Three kids have to share one book. We are very fortunate to have a very large number of books. We want to donate 1,000 to 1,200 books to start a library.

Please contribute these kinds of books...

We are collecting new or gently used books only. The books should be for pre-school through 4th grade. We also need to raise $500 to ship the boxes to Swaziland. It will cost $.50 per book.

Here's how you can contribute your books...

Please bring your book donations to Ohlone School, 950 Amarillo Ave, Palo Alto, CA, 94303 and place them in marked boxes outside of Room 3, 12, or 26. Please do not ship books to the school.
If you would prefer to make a donation of money, you can mail checks to the school in care of Terri Feinberg.

We need to raise funds for shipping the books...
